Lately I've been spending most of my writing time working on Amazing Grace, a short story for my writing anthology, While You Were Waiting. The story takes place in the fictionalized culture of First Baptist, and explores what happens in a church environment when leaders fall from grace. Gabe Preston has been caught in an affair with Jason, the pastor's son. The fallout of this affair intersects in a painful way with the past of Irena Vanadis, his ex-girlfriend.
This story is really stretching me as a writer because both of these characters are so different than me. They react to life differently, are motivated by different factors, and make different choices than I would in their given circumstances. I don't fully understand what makes them tick, but I tried to write down their stories as best I could.
The effect I am looking to create with this piece is one of sadness and desolation at a set of circumstances that does not need to exist, and an environment where forgiveness should be the rule, not the exception. The characters are waiting for acceptance and forgiveness.
I encourage your comments, and as always, thanks for reading!
